Streamlining Healthcare: Simplifying Complex Medical Workflows Across Health Organizations

Overview

Sirma has developed an advanced workflow management platform for 1Health, aimed at simplifying and streamlining complex medical workflows across various independent healthcare organizations. This platform facilitates seamless collaboration among hospitals, doctors, nurses, and external partners, addressing interoperability challenges within the fragmented healthcare environment. By utilizing AI to generate diagnostic process blueprints automatically, 1Health significantly accelerates the creation and execution of workflows in clinical settings.

The Challenge

Healthcare workflows involve many independent entities, such as hospitals, laboratories, and specialists, each utilizing different legacy systems, data formats, and organizational processes. This complexity hinders efficient coordination of diagnostics, treatment, and patient care management. Traditional workflows are often rigid, slow to adapt, and reliant on manual coordination, resulting in delays, redundancies, and gaps in care. The objective was to develop a flexible, AI-powered platform that integrates various healthcare stakeholders, facilitates the rapid onboarding of new partners, and automates workflow mapping to optimize clinical operations.

The Project Scope

Sirma’s engagement involved building a multi-tenant, cloud-native workflow management solution with capabilities to:

  • Enable hospitals, doctors, nurses, and any external healthcare entities to create and customize clinical workflows with unlimited partners;
  • Rapidly onboard new organizations, within a day and without disrupting existing processes;
  • Use AI algorithms to automatically generate detailed diagnostic process blueprints from data inputs, significantly reducing manual workflow design effort;
  • Facilitate secure, compliant data sharing and interoperability across disparate healthcare IT systems;
  • Deliver an intuitive platform accessible via web and mobile devices for clinical staff and administrators.

The Solution

Sirma developed and deployed the 1Health workflow platform, leveraging advanced AI and machine learning technologies to automatically generate diagnostic and clinical process blueprints. The platform’s modular architecture supports:

  • AI-driven workflow modelling based on historical and operational data to optimize clinical path decisions;
  • RESTful APIs and HL7/FHIR support for seamless integration with electronic health records (EHR), laboratories’ information management systems (LIMS), and other legacy healthcare platforms;
  • Dynamic orchestration engines enabling flexible conditional workflows and real-time process adjustments;
  • Robust security, compliance features (HIPAA, SOC2), and audit logging to ensure patient data privacy and regulatory adherence;
  • Rapid partner onboarding facilitated by standardized workflow templates and automation tools reducing integration timeframes to under 24 hours.

Results

The implementation of the 1Health platform enabled:

  • Unmatched deployment speed with new healthcare partners added in a single day, accelerating network expansion and collaboration;
  • Improved interoperability, overcoming fragmented legacy systems, enabling smooth data exchange and coordinated care delivery;
  • Significant reduction in manual workflow design, increasing clinical staff efficiency and refocusing resources on patient care;
  • Enhanced patient outcomes through more streamlined diagnostic processes and fewer operational delays;
  • A scalable, cloud-native architecture ensuring long-term platform adaptability for evolving healthcare needs.

The specific AI algorithms used to generate diagnostic process blueprints typically involve a combination of machine learning and deep learning techniques tailored for clinical workflow modelling and diagnostic decision support. They analyze diverse healthcare data, including patient records and lab results, to automatically create diagnostic process blueprints. This AI-driven method reduces manual work, enhances accuracy, and accelerates the adoption of clinical workflows, ultimately improving patient care coordination.

Technologies

  • AI and machine learning algorithms for automated diagnostic process blueprint generation;
  • Cloud-native, microservices-based architecture supporting multi-tenant scalability;
  • HL7, FHIR, and REST API standards to connect with diverse healthcare IT systems;
  • Dynamic workflow orchestration engines for flexible clinical process management;
  • Secure, compliant data handling frameworks adhering to HIPAA and SOC2 standards;
  • Web and mobile front-end technologies for user-friendly interfaces accessible by clinicians and administrators.
